Opened in 2001, Julia de Burgos Park is named in honor of the Puerto Rican feminist, nationalists and poetess. She is considered one of the greatest poets of Latin America. She was also an advocate for the independence of Puerto Rico and a civil rights activist for women and African/Afro-Caribbean writers. The park is not only a tribute to a great woman, but also a symbol of a community that is committed to developing the arts and to social justice.
The park was designed to be used not only as a quite resting spot, but also for poetry readings, theater, and music. Architect Paula Stahl designed the park with poetry in mind and included a small amphitheater.
The park is located in the corner between Jackson Street and Terry Avenue.
The poetry of Julia de Burgas has been translated to English by Willimantic's Curbstone Press, www.curbstone.org/
