Jillson House History
The Jilson House, located at 627 Main Street, was built by William Jillson in 1825. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. The house is made of granite stone taken from the Willimantic River.
Originally from Rhode Island, Mr Jillson and his brothers Asa and Seth came to Willimantic to manufacture cotton, cloth and yarn. They built three mills here. The Jillson Mills and house were sold to the Willimantic Linen Company in the 1850's. After the Jillson's moved out, the home was used for storage. Later, it was sold and became an apartment house, but eventually fell into disrepair. It was saved and restored through the efforts of the Windham Historical Society. Today it is the Jillson House Museum and is opened occasionally for special events.
