Windham has an area 27.9 square miles and an altitude varying from 125 to 640 feet above sea level.

Rounded hills and broad flood plain valleys dominate the topography of Windham. The area has been glaciated. The glacial action and subsequent stream erosion are primarily responsible for the rounded land forms. The principle drainage feature of Windham is provided by Willimantic and Natchaug Rivers joining southeast of the city of Willimantic to form the Shetucket River. Most level areas occur along the flood plain or as former terraces of the river system.
 
Located in the center of Eastern Connecticut, Windham is easily accessible to all the major markets of the northeast.

The area is less than an hour’s drive from the beaches of Connecticut and Rhode Island. It is also within easy driving distance of the ski resorts of northern New England and the lakes, streams, hiking trails, fishing, hunting and camping areas available throughout Connecticut and the rest of New England.
 
By highways, connections from the Windham Region are made quickly for both Massachusetts (via interstate 86) and Connecticut turnpikes. A major expressway is planned to connect Hartford and Windham, with the segment between Columbia and North Windham already completed. The area is well served by a complete network of local and state highways. both interstate and commuter bus services are available.
 

Air Windham Hospital can be easily reached from the region. Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, a distance of 40 miles, is the nearest fully commercial airport with scheduled service by U.S. Air, American, Delta, United, Southwest, among others. Full air freight service connections are also available. Local airport services are provided at the state owned Windham airport three miles from downtown Willimantic, in North Windham. Excellent paved runways (up to 4360 ft.) and fixed base facilities cater to private Business and pleasure aviation. Full maintenance facilities as well as charter, freight services and flight training are available.
